Mount Pleasant Sweetgrass Harvest Supports Residents
In 2008, Mount Pleasant Waterworks partnered with the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival Association to protect and preserve the Mt Pleasant, SC sweetgrass basket-making industry. Volunteers planted twelve hundred plants near the Rifle Range Road Operations Center. This July, area Mt Pleasant basket-makers harvested the very first crop. With a recent shortage of plants in the area, this new partnership aims to benefit Lowcounrty artisans who depend on the sweetgrass basket-making industry to support their families. Be sure to visit the new Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Center at Mount Pleasant's Memorial Waterfront Park to learn about this beautiful and intricate Gullah trade, dating back more than 300 years.
